What Forgiveness Is and Is Not

Forgiveness is:

  • Forgiveness is for you and not for your partner.
  • Forgiveness is taking back your power from being wounded.
  • Forgiveness is taking responsibility for how you feel now.
  • Forgiveness is about your healing and not about your partner’s action.
  • Forgiveness is a trainable skill, just like learning to throw a baseball.
  • Forgiveness helps you get control over your feelings today.
  • Forgiveness can improve your mental and physical health.
  • Forgiveness is becoming a hero instead of a victim in the story you tell about what happened.
  • Forgiveness is a choice you make.
  • Everyone can learn to forgive.
  • Forgiveness is about today and not yesterday.
  • Forgiveness is making peace when you did not get what you wanted.
  • Forgiveness is acknowledging the hurt.

What Forgiveness Is Not:

  • Forgiveness is not condoning your partner’s unkindness.
  • Forgiveness is not forgetting that something painful happened.
  • Forgiveness is not excusing poor behavior.
  • Forgiveness does not have to be an otherworldly or religious experience.
  • Forgiveness does not require you to reconcile with your partner.
  • Forgiveness does not ask you to give up having painful feelings.
  • Forgiveness does not mean you can’t take your partner to court to get what is owed you.
  • Forgiveness does not mean you have to stay together.
